  • Top 40 Over 40.36: Carl Craig live at The Fruit in Durham

Preface: I recommend listening to Falling Up by Theo Parrish &b Carl Craig while reading this post. My favorite track from Carl. I love how dry the percussion! This was a set I caught at Slingshot in 2022, an electronic music festival held at a former wholesale fruit warehouse near downtown Durham NC. This repurposed…

  • Data.1

Today I’m starting a new series of short posts on data I pull from things I’m reading, listening to, or watching online about history and politics. Right now I’m listening to the podcast Millenials Are Killing Capitalism where they interview Michael Hardt, who teaches at Duke here in Durham. Hardt has a new book out…

  • Inka Cola / Holiday Shows

One of my favorite lyrics on our new record uses a nugget I got from a passage in Mark Pendergrast’s great history of the Coca-Cola corporation: in perhaps the perfect symbol of neo-colonialism, the Coca-Cola corporation actually bought out Inka Cola of Peru.  The line in the song goes,   “Mao’s Little Red Book slandered you…

  • Cat’s Got my Tongue

I’ll be playing my first show in many moons on August 3rd at the Cat’s Cradle Backroom in Carrboro, NC.  Brice Randall Bickford will be opening.  This will be a full band show with 6+ guests.  I’m especially looking forward to playing live with Peter Hughes, one of the first friends I made in this…

I was once listening to an episode of Car Talk on NPR and heard a woman call in to Click and Clack with the following dilemma:  she had a Honda that was running perfectly, and that had proven to be very reliable over the years. Nevertheless, she found the car boring.  She found herself eyeing…

  • Kickstarter up and running today

I launched a Kickstarter campaign to help pay for my forthcoming album today.  You can check out the project description and rewards here. I just got back from spending 4 days recording with Scott Solter, Peter Hughes, Andrew Hiller and Louis Landry at Mitch Easter’s Fidelitorium Recording Studio in Kernersville, NC, (pictured above.)  One of…

  • Top 40 Over 40.11: Wurst is also Best!

I cannot pretend to write an objective review of today’s entry into my Top 40 Over 40 countdown, Transcendental Youth by the Mountain Goats.  You see, I compete in an annual NFL pool with John Darnielle and Peter Hughes.  I’m indebted to Peter for running this pool and to John for keeping me out of…
