  • Top 40 Over 40.34: Cecil Taylor Live in Berlin 1988

There are many impressive creative accomplishments in this series on artists making first rate albums over 40. But no one will ever match what Cecil Taylor did in 1989,at age 59: put out 11 incredible albums recorded the year before. Now granted, they are all live sets from a one month long festival recorded in…

    New Subscription Available On Bandcamp

I’ve started a subscription option on Bandcamp. Here’s the description you’ll find there – consider joining or telling a friend: https://jdsoundbite.bandcamp.com/subscribe The great improvisational trumpet player Bill Dixon once said in an interview that he was more interested in seeing other musicians rehearse than he was in seeing them perform. The reason? He was more…

  • Top 40 Over 40.26: Homeboy Sandman & Edan’s “The Gut”

My favorite track to come out over the past year or so is from the album Humble Pi, which is a collaboration between two great artists, Homeboy Sandman and Edan.   There’s a big contrast here between the discographies of these two guys:  Homeboy Sandman’s been putting out records regularly over the last dozen years,…

  • Top 40 Over 40.22: Mahmoud Ahmed

Universities can be weird places to see shows, musical or otherwise.  The setting can make it feel like whatever creative process put forward is subject for intellectual consideration from a distance, rather than communal participation.  What’s on offer might be critiqued and dismissed, or fetishized as a deracinated trophy from a frequently subaltern culture that…

Just a quick word to share the news that Scott Solter and I have finished mixing our new record and it is now headed for mastering.  I will of course share details about its release as they become available.  I’d like to thank Scott for all the hard work he put into producing this project…

We had a lot of fun playing in Columbus Ohio, Chicago Illinois, and Bloomington Indiana last week.  Thanks to The Owl, The Big Room Bar, and Landlocked Music for hosting us.   If you are local to or visiting NC, there are some intermittent local shows coming up:  first a solo acoustic show at…

  • Support Alerta Migratoria NC

As a follow up to my last post about ICE raids in North Carolina in general, I’d like to post a link to a GoFundMe campaign to support Alerta Migratoria NC.  We at the Durham Association of Educators have been meeting with them to look for advice on how to respond to the recent case…
