Support GLBTQ Staff & Students in DPS

I’ll be participating in a roundtable discussion on supporting GLBTQ staff and students in Durham Public Schools at Bull McCabe’s at 427 West Main Street in downtown Durham next Tuesday, February 2nd, from 6 – 7:30 pm.  The event is sponsored by the Education Team of the Durham People’s Alliance, whose board I’ve just started serving on.

One my my Durham Association of Educators colleagues, Holly Jordan, will be on the panel along with myself, Dr. Molly Parks and a few DPS students.  Holly is a teacher at Hillside High, founder of the GayStraight Alliance at Hillside, a Safe Space Trainer, and Board member of Safe Schools North Carolina.  Dr. Molly Parks is a psychologist specializing in working with gender spectrum identity in young people.

I’ve seen tremendous progress in my lifetime on the presence of anti-homophobia curriculum in schools in Massachusetts, and hope to be a part of a movement that sees some of the same steps taken here in North Carolina.  We’ve got a ways to go, and we need to come together to take this on.  I’m super excited to see the alliance Holly started at Hillside, and very proud that another DAE team member, Anca Stefan, has just started the first middle school GayStraight Alliance in the state of NC at Lakewood Montessori.

If you’re local, please come on downtown to join us.

Feel free to download and circulate the flyer below widely.Screenshot 2016-01-26 21.11.47
